My Top 7 Make-Up Essentials for Beginners

Many of my friends have asked me to give some guidance as it pertains to make-up. I am a simple girl, who enjoys simple make-up. As we have discussed before, I do not believe make-up is necessary for every woman and I certainly do not believe beauty comes from makeup.  However, if you would like to enhance your natural beauty with a little makeup, I think you should give it a try!

My dad always says, “When a home has good bones, you do not have to do much to fix it up.” And sis, YOU have “good bones” already. You do not have to do much to look your best. Who God created you to be is already beautiful.

With that said, let’s hop in! Please note that I have tried my best to link the products mentioned. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Foundation

A home cannot stand without a sturdy foundation. Well, your makeup will not stand, if the foundation is not good. You want your foundation to be smooth and flawless so that the rest of your make-up pops. A common misconception is that in order to have flawless make-up you have to spend a lot of money. It’s a total myth! You can get everything you need at the drugstore.

In fact, my favorite foundations come from the drugstore. If you have oily or combination skin, give Loreal Infallible Pro-Matte or Maybelline Superstay a try!

Concealer

I love love love a good concealer! While my skin is pretty clear, I do have undereye circles and spots of hyperpigmentation. So, when I want to be extra pretty or look a little more put together, I love to apply concealer to those problem areas. In order to highlight, you only want to go one to two shades lighter than your complexion.

My faves right now are Maybelline Age Rewind and Colourpop No Filter concealer. They are nice and creamy.

Setting powder

I will be brief on this one. You NEED a good setting powder. Applying concealer is amazing, but it will likely crease under your eyes if you do not set it. Laura Mercier is a great setting powder, but I have also heard good things about Airspun.

Bronzer

Often, preparing the “base” can cause your face to look a little flat, but we want multidimensional makeup, because our faces are naturally multidimensional. Bronzer brings life and dimension back to your face. Personally, I prefer bronzer over harsh contouring. NYX has nice bronzers, but my favorite is Mac Mineralize Skin Finish. I also use Maybelline powder foundation in shade coconut to deepen my contour.

Eyebrow Pencil

Honey, brows are life! Your brows frame your entire face. I suggest purchasing a brow pencil that also has an eyebrow brush on the end. Maybelline has great brow pencils! SN: Never use a jet black pencil unless for some reason your hair is jet black.

Lip gloss

Girl, get a good clear lip gloss from the beauty supply store. When I was a teenager, I desperately wanted to wear makeup, but my mom always encouraged me that all I needed was a little lip gloss. She was right! Adding a little lip gloss whether you are wearing makeup or not is always a good look.

Mascara

They say the eyes are the window to the soul. They should stand out. Black mascara makes any eye color stand out. Do not feel like you have to go to the makeup counter for a good mascara. Your local drugstore will have plenty of options that work just fine.

As a final reminder, you do not NEED makeup to make you beautiful. YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL. WITHOUT. IT.

Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes.

You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God

This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautifulThey put their trust in God and accepted the authority of their husbands.

1 Peter 3:3-5 NLT

Big hugs,
